Residence information

James Tobin, Senior, immigrated on 30 March 1830 to Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, at Port Jackson. He arrived aboard the "Dunvegan Castle". He was assigned to Archibald Bell junior at the Hunter River.4 He and Catherine Maloney lived at North Bourke in Bourke, New South Wales, Australia, in 1880. He had disposed of his propoerty on Marra Creek (between Quambone and Gongolgon).2

Involvement in crime

James Tobin, Senior, was convicted of picking pockets on 5 April 1827 in London. He was sentenced to transportation for life. He was tried at the Old Bailey in London where his victim, barrister Philip Tatterall, and witness, Thomas Peregrine Turner, both gave evidence against 12-year-old James. His defence that he had picked up the handkerchief after he saw two running boys drop it. Given the circumstances and the age of the accused, the life sentence seems quite incredible overkill.4 He was granted a second class conditional pardon on 2 March 1846 in Sydney.

Death

James Tobin, Senior, died from great age on 28 August 1901 at North Bourke in Bourke.2,6 He was buried on 30 August 1901 after a funeral at the Union Hotel in Bourke.2
