Margaret Scott Ballantyne's great-grandfather, Thomas, was born around 1771. It is very likely that he was born on the farm Hair Myers near East Kilbride where he lived out his life. His father's name may have been James (since Thomas named his eldest son James).

Thomas married Jean Park and they had nine children who were all baptised at East Kilbride between 1795 and 1816, including their son Thomas (born 1799).

Thomas senior was recorded as a 70-year-old farmer at Hairimus (in East Kilbride) on the 1841 census, along with his wife Jean, two adult sons and a grand-daughter. The farm was recorded on the following census as Hair Myers,  being farmed by his son John. Thomas had died, leaving Jean as a widow who lived alone at High Markethill, East Kilbride.

Jean lived to the remarkable age of 95 years, dying at Mearns (Renfrew) on 21 November 1867. Her parents were Peter Park (an auctioneer) and Janet nee Hamilton. Her grandparents were Peter Park and Agnes nee McClean.
