James Kelly was born in 1835.

Involvement in crime

James Kelly was allegedly involved in the armed hold up and robbery of 12 travellers on 31 January 1867 in Bathurst. The four robbers ambushed the travellers on the Carcoar Road about 25 miles from Bathurst. They stole money, firearms and two horses. They then went to a public house and stole 30 ounces of gold from the proprietor.1 He was arrested for the Carcoar Road robbery on 5 February 1867. He was convicted of the Carcoar Road robbery on 17 April 1867 in Bathurst. They were both sentenced to serve ten years hard labour on the roads.1
