Involvement in crime

George James Gibson was on 18 April 1822 in Leicesterfield, England. stealing four engraved copper plates1 He was indicted for stealing 4 copper plates from the dwelling house of Joseph Matthews on 22 May 1822 in St Martin in the fields, London. His co-accused were James Edwards and James Flawn who all appreared before Mr Justice Bayley. Both Gibson (aged 17) and Edwards (aged 49) were found guilty and sentenced to death, but the jury recommended mercy for Gibson because it was his first offence. His sentence must have been commuted to transportation for life.9,10,11,3,5 He was arrested for neglect of duty in November 1823 in Camden, New South Wales, Australian Colonies. neglect of duty12 He was recommended for a ticket of leave on 31 May 1831 in Sutton Forest, New South Wales, Australian Colonies.5 He was granted a ticket of leave on 29 September 1831 in Sutton Forest, New South Wales, Australian Colonies.5 He was granted a conditional pardon on 10 October 1840.8,13 He was granted an absolute pardon on 11 September 1849.8
