William Carlow emigrated on 12 September 1821 from Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. He was a convict transported aboard the convict ship Mary. He had been sentenced to hang but this was commuted to transportation for life. His crime was burglary along with John Orams. James Hurrell was acquitted.1 He immigrated on 23 January 1822 to Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, at Port Jackson.1

Involvement in crime

William Carlow was assigned to Rev Samuel Marsden in February 1822 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies.1 He was granted his conditional pardon in 1838.1,5 Her spouse, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, on 26 February 1862. The minister who performed her first marriage 35 years earlier was called, but was unable to identify her. Moses Powell deposed that he had known her for forty years and knew her to have had three children with her first husband, a man named Grimes. Her defence counsel (Mr Moffat) asked him one devastating question: were you present at the marriage to Grimes? Upon Powell's answer of no, Moffat successfully argued that Catherine had no case to answer because no proof of a first marriage had been presented to the court. She got off on a technicality.6
