Charles, 's child, resided with, in Auchinleck, Scotland, on 30 March 1851. on his farm of 65 acres.8 George Samson Gibb lived at Brentwood in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 30 March 1861, a ploughman servant in the farming household of William Lennox.9

Working life

  • Circa 1863 George Samson Gibb was a gold prospector at goldfields in Victoria. In the early 1860s the three contractors had tried their luck on the Victorian goldfields.10
  • In August 1870 George Samson Gibb was a tank sinker in Bourke.10
  • On 28 March 1872 George Samson Gibb was mining prospector in Bourke. The "Bourke Tele" reported "Yesterday, a well-equipped prospecting party, under the direction of Mr G Gibb, started for the purpose of opening the new country discovered by Messrs Gibb and Connelly and which we reported as taken up some time ago by Messrs R&H Nancarrow, G Gibb and John Connelly. The country, which it is proposed to test, is situated about seven miles to the NW of the Cobar Copper Mine. The present proprietors propose, as soon as they have sufficiently tested the lode, throwing the affair open to the public, so that its real worth may not be witheld from want of sufficient capital to give it a fair trial. The party have taken simple provisions, tools, etc. to last them over three months..."11

George Sampson Gibb had married his sister, Mary Ann Reed, three years earlier. Gibb also placed an advertisement in the same edition of the newspaper. "The Bourke Hotel. Darling Street Bourke. Lately owned by GC Reed has been purchased by GS Gibb, who now begs to inform his Friends and the Public that he is prepared to offer them the Best Accommodation that can be obtained in Bourke. The Hotel has been renovated, and visitors will find every comfort so necessary to ensure the success of any Business. The bar has been stocked with Wines and Liquors of the best brand., Overlanders and Commercial Travellers will find every convenience."13

Death

George Samson Gibb died from intemperance on 9 December 1875 at age 35 in Bourke.4,14,1,15 He was buried on 10 December 1875 at Bourke Cemetery in Bourke.15 He had his estate probated on 13 February 1877 in Bourke, New South Wales, Australia.16,17
