John J Foran was convicted of illegally using a horse in December 1865 in Rockley. He served a sentence of 3 months with hard labour in Bathurst Gaol.
1 He was allegedly involved in the armed hold up and robbery of 12 travellers on 31 January 1867 in Bathurst. The four robbers ambushed the travellers on the Carcoar Road about 25 miles from Bathurst. They stole money, firearms and two horses. They then went to a public house and stole 30 ounces of gold from the proprietor.
1 He was arrested for the Carcoar Road robbery on 11 February 1867.
1 He was released on bail on 27 February 1867.
1 He was part of a gang that held up the publican on 12 April 1867 in Dirty Swamp. The gang was led by the notorious bushranger Lawrence Cummins. They robbed travellers and stole a horse. They then went to Mutton falls where they attempted to hold up Ann Webb's store. Anne's son Robert shot and wounded Cummins but he and John Foran escaped.
1 He was arrested for the April robberies on 24 July 1867.
1 He was convicted of 3 charges of robbery with arms on 18 October 1867 in Bathurst. He was sentenced to 15 years hard labour on the roads. His co-accused (Larry Cummins) was convicted on 6 charges of robbery with arms and sentenced to 30 years.
1 He was granted a conditional pardon in May 1874. He had served only 6 years and 7 months of his 15 year sentence.
