William Entwistle was born on 1 June 1792 at Pasture in Haslingden.1,2,3,4,5 He was baptized on 10 June 1792 at St James Church in Haslingden, Lancashire.2

William Entwistle and Mary Campbell were married on 20 September 1831 at Scots Presbyterian Church in Parramatta.6,4,7 He and Frances Day were married on 24 December 1840 in Parramatta.6,8

Residence information

William Entwistle lived in Edgworth, Lancashire, in 1793, which was later recorded as his native place.5 Emigrated from on 17 June 1819. The captain had received dispatches for the NSW Governor on the previous day. The ship sailed at 6am under a north-easterly breeze.9,10,3 On on 29 October 1819, arrived at aboard. was at age 23 years old. The ship anchored in Sydney Cove on the following day. The ship brough a guard of 31 men of the 89th Regiment. It had touched at Rio de Janiero en route, leaving there on 17 August.10,11,3,12 He lived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, on 28 June 1830, for up to three months.3 He lived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, on 4 October 1830, for an additional 3 months.3 He purchased a block of land on 1 July 1842 in Parramatta. The land was near the north-eastern corner of O'Connell and Argyle Streets (Parramatta), diagonally opposite the Church of England Burial Ground13 He was granted land by the Governor Sir George Gipps on 29 August 1842 in Parramatta.6 He lived at O'Connell Street in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, on 11 June 1851, dealer.14

Involvement in crime

William Entwistle was convicted and sentenced to transportation for 7 years on 20 January 1813 in Salford, Lancashire.15 Joseph and James, aged at age 46, in Lancaster, England, United Kingdom, on 26 January 1813. All four Entwistles were from Edgeworth, Lancashire16,17 William Entwistle was transferred from the Portland Hulk to the Bellerophon Hulk on 16 October 1816 in Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom.15,18 He was discharged from the Bellerophon Hulk on 28 January 1818 in Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom.15,18 On 20 March 1819 in Lancaster, England, United Kingdom, William Entwistle was charged with having uttered a forged one pound note to Hannah Whitehead at Blackburn.19,9,20,3,5 He was pleaded guilty to possession of a forged note on 23 March 1819 in Lancaster, England, United Kingdom. He was acquitted on the capital charge of having uttered a forged note20 He was sentenced to 14 years transportation on 2 April 1819 in Lancaster, England, United Kingdom.21,22,23,9,3,5 He was was received into the Retribution Hulk from Lancaster Gaol on 5 May 1819 in Woolwich, Kent, England, United Kingdom.23 , aged at age 22, in Woolwich, Kent, England, United Kingdom, on 3 June 1819. Fifty prisoners from the Retribution Hulk went aboard at 1pm. An hour later they were joined by another fifty from the Bellerophon Hulk. At 6pm the ship weighed anchor and moved to a little below the Great Nore. The ship anchored off Dungenness on 5 June and moved to Spithead on 7 June, where 32 more convicts were taken aboard from the Laurel Hulk (at 2pm); plus another 40 from the Leviathan Hulk (at 6pm). The 16 youngest were selected and put into a separate prison on board the ship.23,10 He was placed on board the convict transport ship Malabar on 3 June 1819 in Woolwich, Kent, England, United Kingdom.23,3 , aged at age 23, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies, on 5 November 1819. The convicts were landed with their rations at 5am. Governor Macquarie addressed them in the gaol yard at 10am. None of the prisoners made any complaint against their treatment on the voyage. In fact, the prisoners presented Captain Ascough with a letter of thanks for their humane treatment during the voyage. Not a single person had been lost. The convicts were then distributed to Parramatta, Windsor, Liverpool and Emu Plains for assignment. Both James Grime and William Entwistle were sent to Parramatta.10,24,25 He was assigned to Gregory L M Blaxland in December 1819 in Field of Mars.6,26 He was granted a ticket of leave on 10 November 1825 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies. Blaxland attested to his good character.6,26,3 He was issued with a replacement ticket of leave on 6 January 1831 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies. The new ticket replaced number 551/2025 of 10 Nov 1825 which was returned in a mutilated condition27 He was granted a certificate of freedom on the expiration of his sentence on 9 November 1833 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australian Colonies.6,5 He was confined to Parramatta Gaol on 7 April 1835 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies. He was required by the Parramatta Bench to take his trial at the Quarter Sessions.6,28 He was admitted to bail on 11 April 1835 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies.6,28

Death

William Entwistle signed a will on 23 June 1862 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australian Colonies. William owned two brick cottages in O'Connell Street Parramatta38 He died from paralysis on 30 July 1864 at age 72 in Parramatta. The death notice is appended with: "Geelong papers please copy". Perhaps his cousin, James Grime junior was then living in Geelong.6,38,37,39,1 He was buried on 1 August 1864 at St John's Cemetery in Parramatta.6,37,39 He had his estate probated on 29 September 1864 in Parramatta. His estate included two brick cottages in O'Connell Street Parramatta along with furniture, Plate, linen, china, books and pictures. The cottages were to be retained until his youngest surviving child reached her majority at which time they were to be sold and the proceeds divided equally between his eight surviving children.6,38
